What is your dream?

Dreams, both business and personal.

How many times have you said If only I had known that…

What if you did?

Today I met a truly inspirational leader. Nikki Gatenby of Propeller net http://www.propellernet.co.uk/.

She does exactly what it says on the tin. She lives and enables dreams. On the window on the way in is a quote from Walt Disney.

Nikki Gatenby is acts by being  open and wide and enables every dream in her business.  Be all that you can, and do everything you can, to have what is your dream.

Be, do, have…  a great ideal and so make life better.

The why? for Nkki is to make life better. By providing a channel to enable the dreams of her staff she has developed a portfolio of businesses and created a commercial success. It is not about the money, it is about the people, the reason why we do what we do, and how we choose to live our lives. In the business Propeller net have established a self-responsibility for HR and a role that is responsible for people.

We spoke for over an hour and at the end of our conversation, with no inhibition, I said my dream is to make a difference by providing memories, so that businesses and people can accelerate and grow through shared experiences.  I had the confidence to just blurt it out.

This has been in my head for a while. It was the first time I had said it to anyone.

The idea came to me and I looked for an example. What came to mind was the movie Blade Runner.

A film that is about changing the lives of individuals who were created to serve. At one point the anti-hero tries out his technology on a replicant “more human than human”. The idea is that there is a rebellion in the community of replicants as they come to realise that they are also human, and so the true society on Earth needs to be protected. It is a thought provoking film set in a futuristic world.

The technology takes much longer to identify that the subject is not truly human. The subject has advanced understanding of what it is to be human. The differentiator is Memory. She has memories of growing up and all the experiences, pain and fun, that we experience. This knowledge widens and opens our ability to communicate and helps us deal with life.

Every day I think about the life cycle of a business.  Why do some businesses grow faster than others?  Part of the reason is that they have the skills and understanding to cope with what life throws at them. In other words, a collective memory.

So, what would happen if we could plant those experiences in businesses before they start, or at points on the journey?  I am talking about the ability to share memories and create a stronger, more sustainable, individual business.  My answer is that we would make a difference in the world.
